Most dogs don't get heavy all at once. They get heavy across two years of slightly shorter walks, slightly larger portions, and the general kindness pet parents extend to animals who are getting older. By the time they notice their pet has become obese, the weight has been compounding for a while.
Pet obesity is not a problem of neglect. Most overweight dogs have pet parents that love them, conduct proper research to find the best food, take them to the vet, and genuinely believe they are paying attention.
The problem is in the gradual change that is nearly invisible to people who are watching every day. You cannot compare your dog from today to yesterday. That way, the dog looks fine.

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) has tracked weight trends in companion animals since 2007. Their data consistently places overweight and obese dogs between 55% and 60% of the US dog population. That is a number that hasn’t changed for over a decade, despite the rise of pet wellness, better food labeling, and more awareness campaigns.
Pet parents know the risks. But that hasn’t changed the numbers. The health consequences of pet obesity are real.
Obese dogs have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and certain cancers.
But more importantly, obese dogs live shorter lives. For pet parents, that is days, months, and weeks without their best friend.
A 14-year controlled study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2002, followed Labrador Retrievers from puppyhood and found that dogs maintained at a lean body condition lived a median of 1.8 years longer than their heavier littermates.
That is two more years, with no drugs or surgery, only through weight management.
Pet parents and businesses underestimate the financial cost of managing obesity-related conditions over the lifetime of a dog.
Let’s start with osteoarthritis, one of the most common examples. Here is the harsh reality. This is not a one-time expense. The condition requires a long-term management, including anti-inflammatory medications, joint supplements, physiotherapy, and more.
Managing a dog with arthritis from his early adulthood into his senior years can cost thousand dollars per year.
Diabetes is a similar example. Dogs with diabetes need twice-daily insulin injections, regular glucose monitoring, and more frequent vet visits.
The reality is many of these conditions are preventable, or at the very least, delayed, through weight management. But to manage weight, pet parents need consistent monitoring.
The standard explanation is that pet owners don't know what a healthy weight looks like. That's partly true. Veterinarians use the Body Condition Score (BCS), a 9-point scale where 5 is ideal and 7 or above is overweight. Most owners have never encountered this scale, and have no way to evaluate their pet on a daily basis.
The bigger problem is the perception. A dog who gains two pounds over eight months does not register as heavier. You see that dog every day. You compare today to yesterday.
By the time the change is obvious, the dog may be carrying 15 to 20% excess body weight. To put it in human terms, that is a 150-pound person carrying an extra 25 to 30 pounds.
The behavioral change is what you notice, but by that time, it is too late. The dog who used to sprint to the door now takes a moment to get up from the couch. The dog who ran after a ball eight times now drops it after four. The dog who slept without moving now shifts position repeatedly through the night, which can indicate joint pain.
